Evaluation Basics (8 Instructional Hours)

An introduction and overview to everything you need to develop a completed evaluation design and implementation plan
  • the different types of evaluation
  • how to determine the type of evaluation that suites your organization’s needs;
  • the importance of developing a purpose and focus for your evaluation that takes into account the needs of all stakeholders
  • the value of creating a logic model and how to create one
  • how to develop evaluation questions that yield useful data
  • the types of methods that can be used in evaluation
  • how to create an evaluation plan 
Product: By the end of this non profit evaluation workshop, each participating organization will develop a program evaluation plan.   

Recommendations: We recommend that organizations send at least three staff members to these trainings. In this way, the level of effort required for the evaluation project is distributed across multiple staff members and there is a greater likelihood that the learning will be sustained. 

Specifics: This workshop includes 6 one-hour real-time classroom sessions, 2 hours of one-to-one online consultation, and unlimited peer-to-peer support.

Creating Logic Models (6 instructional hours)

This non profit evaluation workshop walks you through the process of creating a program logic model that illustrates your programs unique approach, outlines its activities, defines its short and long term outcomes, and begins to help you and your staff unearth assumptions that can be tested during your evaluation.  Logic models are also a great snapshot of your program that can be shared with other stakeholders (e.g., foundations, donors, board members, etc).  In addition, the process of creating a logic model can be a terrific internal communication tool, supporting your stakeholders to develop and use common language about your organizations activities and outcomes.  

Product: By the end of this workshop, each participating organization will have created a program logic model.   

Recommendation: We recommend that you try to engage a wide-range of stakeholders in the entire Evaluation Access training process or in the homework activities.   

Specifics: This workshop includes 3 one-hour real-time classroom sessions, 3 hours of one-to-one online consultation with Evaluation Access GEACs and unlimited access to peer support.

Designing Your Own Survey (6 instructional hours)

This non profit evaluation workshop will walk you through all the steps necessary to create a quality survey.  You will learn how to develop meaningful survey questions and response categories, how to pilot your surveys, and the pros and cons of pre/post designs and online surveys.  

Products: By the end of this workshop, each participating organization will have revised an existing survey or developed a new survey.   

Recommendations: Organizations participating in this workshop will need to have completed a program logic model prior to their participation.  This will ensure that the surveys developed during this workshop will effectively measure the interventions and outcomes most relevant to the program or organization.  

Specifics: This workshop includes 2 one-hour real time classroom sessions, 4  hours of one-to-one online consultation and unlimited access to peer support.

Survey and Other Quantitative Data Analysis (8 instructional hours)

This non profit evaluation workshop will help you to analyze your survey data.  During the first session participants will learn how to create a codebook and enter data.  During the following sessions the class will work with real data sets to run frequencies and basic cross-tabulations and create tables and charts that represent the findings.   

Products: Survey codebook, survey analysis plan, basic frequencies and cross-tabs of your own survey data. 

Specifics: This workshop includes 4 one-hour real-time classroom sessions, 4 hours of one-to-one online consultation and unlimited peer-to-peer support.  

Recommendations: We recommend that you attend this workshop once you have a complete set of data that you would like to analyze.  We also recommend that you take Evaluation Access’s Designing Your Own Survey workshop prior to participating.

This workshop will teach you all you need to know to develop and analyze your own interviews and focus groups.  Participants will develop interview and focus group protocols and practice conducting interviews and facilitating focus groups.  In addition, participants will learn to identify themes in their data, develop coding strategies, and write up findings.

Creative/fun ways to gather data (5 instructional hours)

This non profit evaluation workshop will provide an overview of various types of creative fun data gathering methods, including mapping, photo-journalism, drawing, and performance.  Participants will learn about each of these strategies and determine which might be most suitable for their population.  During the workshop, each participant will pilot at least one of these methods and receive support to revise and strengthen the approach, and analyze the data.

Putting It All In One Neat Package: Evaluation Reporting (7 instructional hours)

During this workshop, participants will review and critique evaluation reports to learn how evaluation reports are structured and how various data can be brought together to address specific evaluation questions. Additionally, participants will learn to write conclusions about their evaluation findings and draw together key messages from their data.
